ABOUT ME

Ellen Douglas

I was born in the Mississippi Delta — home of the Blues, catfish, and cotton. My family and I moved to central Mississippi when I was five, which is where I still live today with my husband and two kids. We live on our family-run cattle farm, which has been one of the biggest inspirations in my photography.

The ability a camera gives you to capture what you see is a skill that I have been slowly developing for around 15 years. I don’t know an exact time because it seems I’ve always had a camera in my hand. I’ve captured images with everything from a film camera all the way to a mirrorless camera.

When my first child was born, I really started working on my skills as a photographer. I was like most people and saw the cute baby pictures on Pinterest and thought, “Oh that doesn’t look that hard.” Boy was I wrong, but that didn’t stop me! I pushed forward and learned as I went. I made it a goal to get at least one set of good images a month. Sometimes it took multiple attempts, but that didn’t matter. I achieved my goal with both of my kids, capturing images of them for each month of their first year, and feel the challenge has helped me grow immensely as a photographer. Not just in learning the nuances of light manipulation, camera control, or picture editing, but probably the most important lesson of all — the ability to connect with my subject and wait for the right moment to snap the image.

I feel the next step in my journey as a photographer is to open myself up to others. I’m always up for a challenge or a new adventure. If you would like me to photograph your family as I have mine, please reach out to me.

Sunsets, like life’s little moments, are viewed with wonder not just because they are beautiful, but because they are fleeting.
